WHERE WE WORK
The United Republic of Tanzania was formed as a sovereign state in 1964 when Tanganyika and Zanzibar united, making Tanzania the largest country in East Africa. Tanzania is situated just south of the equator in sub-Saharan Africa. Tanzania has a population of approximately 55 million and over half of the population are children. The primary languages spoken are English and Swahili, although many tribal languages are spoken also.
A majority of the population lives in rural areas where poverty is the greatest, and our work is generally focused on rural communities. Safe water is not accessible to a majority of Tanzanian households. Gender-based violence affects one-third of all women in Tanzania. Only 16% of women and 23% of men are educated past the elementary level. (CIA Government Data Library, 2020)
Empower Tanzania serves the Kilimanjaro Region through programs in health, education, economic empowerment, and agriculture/environment. We work in partnership with Tanzanians to find sustainable solutions to many of the challenges that impact their quality of life. We are expanding into new regions in Tanzania in 2024!

WE BELIEVE THAT INCLUDING THE ENVIRONMENT AS AN ESSENTIAL PILLAR OF IMPACT IS IMPERATIVE FOR A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE.
-
HEALTH
ACCESS TO HEALTH INFORMATION IS IMPROVING QUALITY OF LIFE FOR PEOPLE LIVING IN RURAL TANZANIA AND BUILDING RESILIENCY WITHIN COMMUNITIES.
In October of 2023, Empower Tanzania lost an amazing leader when Phil Latessa passed away. Phil will be incredibly missed by so many people around the world. As one of our founding members, former Executive Director, and Board President, Phil led Empower Tanzania as a force for good with unwavering guidance and empowers us to continue our mission. Phil visited Tanzania over 30 times and was made honorary chief of two tribes of Maasai. He touched countless lives through his international impact and leaves an inspiring legacy. We will be eternally grateful for the change he created in Tanzania and beyond!
We raised over $15,000 for our 2023 year-end campaign dedicated to Phil Latessa. Thanks for Phil-ing up our cup! Your support propels our programs!
Empower Tanzania has a dedicated staff in Tanzania who collaborates with our entire team, volunteer Board of Directors, and many wonderful partners, volunteers, and donors who support our life-changing work. Together, we make a difference!
To all of our supporters, we are so grateful for your generosity that makes our work possible.
An extra THANK YOU to our Wezesha Circle Members for your continued commitment! Your consistent contributions propel our programs.
