ENVIRONMENT
WE BELIEVE THAT INCLUDING THE ENVIRONMENT AS AN ESSENTIAL PILLAR OF IMPACT IS IMPERATIVE FOR A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE.
We are expanding into solution-based work tied to protection of the vital eco-systems upon which so many African people rely. Environmental conservation is also deeply connected to our empowerment and education efforts.
Kirinjiko Farm Plot
In 2020, Empower Tanzania invested in six acres near our home office in Same, Tanzania. At our Kirinjiko Farm Plot, we are creating a SMART Center for learning and gathering. We have already added a 40,000-liter rainwater collection tank and restrooms. A fence with a sliding gate was recently installed around the first acre. Lighting for the market building is next! “On this land, we plan to grow nutritional food and cash crop, train farmers, provide nutritional food to marginalized people, provide practical education to farmers on entrepreneurship skills, and emphasize environment conservation techniques and sustainable tree planting,” notes Elibariki Kisimbo, Empower Tanzania Country Director.
Holistic Rangeland Management Project
In March 2022, Empower Tanzania completed a pilot project with 4 Maasai groups in Ruvu village. After a successful initiative, a joint proposal was developed in collaboration with the Same District Council for future implementation. The plan includes conducting training focused on holistic rangeland management, ecosystem literacy, conflict resolution, and rights of land and natural resources.
Integrated Farming & Seed Transfer Projects
Empower Tanzania partnered with East-West Seed Knowledge Transfer to complete a 3-day training in August 2022 for 30 farmers in Lambo village, Mwanga District. Seeds distributed and vegetables trained on were tomatoes, eggplant (2 varieties), peppers, cabbage, beans, leaf and other lettuces. The farmers learned to plant nutritious food from seeds, and their new knowledge will be demonstrated during the rainy season (late October through December) as a variety of healthy produce grows!
